Soda or Pop? Take the Poll.

For The Glamorous One, I researched add-in syrups for soda fountains. Not as exciting as the indoor skydiving I did for The Adventurous One, but I did have a pretty good sugar buzz going for a few hours.

So speaking of soda … do you call it soda or pop or something else? I’m curious. Vote here!

Pinterest Boards

I try to do as much hands-on research as possible, but there’s simply not time to visit all the places or experience all the things I write about firsthand. The internet has made research about a thousand times easier and this is where Pinterest rocks. I used to screencap places or things I wanted to write about, but now I just plug them into Pinterest.

I keep the boards for any works in progress secret so I don’t give away too many details, but after the book’s published, it’s fun to share some of the images that gave me inspiration.

You can see my boards for The Passionate One on my Pinterest page, including some marvelous glass work by artists that are mentioned in the book.

Glass Blowing Lessons

Learning about glass blowing was by far my favorite bit of research for The Passionate One. I’d watched plenty of glass blowing tutorials on YouTube, but there’s nothing like experiencing the real thing. I’d originally planned a glass blowing date as part of the “Matt is Not Boring” plan he concocts, but the moment I stepped into the studio, I knew I’d found Matt’s passion and glass blowing had to be a bigger part of the story.

At the studio, my daughter and I met Amelia, who runs the showroom, and Vicente, the master artist. We were the last appointment of the day and when they learned I was researching a book, they gave me triple the normal time and very patiently answered all my questions. They even let me try several different techniques that were not part of our original lesson.

Here are some highlights:

This was one of the funnest things I’ve ever done and a heartfelt thank you to Holdman Studios. Visit their website to see some of the amazing pieces Vicente and the other artists have made. Once you’ve tried it and know firsthand how difficult it is, their skill is simply breathtaking.
